International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed with theme Listen First


International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed on 26 June 2016. The day was observed with theme Listen First.
2016 theme Listen First is an initiative to increase support for prevention of drug use that is based on science and is thus an effective investment in the well-being of children and youth, their families and their communities.

On this day, the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) also released the World Drug Report 2016.
United Nations resolution
On 7 December 1987, United Nations general Assembly (UNGA) via resolution 42/112 decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. It was decided to observe the day as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.
This resolution recommended further action with regard to the report and conclusions of the 1987 International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
UN General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) on drugs
Earlier in April 2016, the United Nations held a Special Session (UNGASS) on drugs. This session marked an important milestone in achieving the goals set in the policy document of 2009 "Political Declaration and Plan of Action on International Cooperation towards an Integrated and Balanced Strategy to Counter the World Drug Problem.
The plan defined action to be taken by Member States as well as goals to be achieved by 2019.
Recommendations of the outcome documents were
• Measures to address demand and supply reduction and to improve access to controlled medicines while preventing diversion.
• It also cover the areas of human rights, youth, children, women and communities; emerging challenges, including new psychoactive substances; strengthening international cooperation; and alternative development.
• The text puts new emphasis on proportionate national sentencing policies and practices for drug-related offences, and features a strong focus on prevention and treatment.
How the day was observed in India?
On this day, the Punjab Frontier of Border Security Force organised a Cycle Rally comprising 65 BSF personnel led by Deputy Inspector General (Operations) BSF Punjab Frontier Mohan Lal from its Jalandhar Headquarters.
This Cycle Rally was aimed at spreading the message of utmost dedication to national Security, awareness against drugs and to spread the message of physical fitness amongst the citizens and particularly amongst the youth.

International Day in Support of Victims of Torture was observed on 26 June 2016. The day is held annually to speak out against the crime of torture. It also seeks to honor and support victims and survivors throughout the world.
Torture seeks to annihilate the victim’s personality and denies the inherent dignity of the human being. The United Nations has condemned torture from the outset as one of the vilest acts perpetrated by human beings on their fellow human beings.

The 10th National Statistics Day was celebrated on 29 June 2016 across the country with the theme Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.
The main function for the celebration was organised by the Ministry of Statistics Programme Implementation at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
The National Statistics Day is celebrated annually on the occasion of birth anniversary of Late Prof PC Mahalanobis, India’s eminent statistician.
Its objective is to create public awareness among people, especially the younger generation about the importance of statistics in daily life as well as in the process of planning and development.
The 2015 National Statistics Day was celebrated with the theme social development.
World Statistics Day is celebrated on 20 October 2010 worldwide.

The 2016 National Doctors’ Day was observed on 1 July 2016 across India.
The day is observed to honour legendary physician, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy whose birth and death anniversary falls on the same day.
Dr Roy was honoured with the Bharat Ratna on 4 February 1961.
The National Doctors’ Day gives an opportunity to raise the awareness about the doctor’s role in daily life.

Annamalai University (Tamil Nadu) has extended applications for admissions of students into their MBBS and BDS courses.You can now register online for MBBS and BDS admissions in Annamalai University.In Annamalai university, MBBS has been allotted to about 150 seats, while BDS has a total of 80 seats. The University received a total of 4906 applications for admissions into MBBS. And a total of 1079 applications have been received for BDS. The Annamalai University had to reject 276 applications of MBBS and 52 for BDS among the applications received
The applicants for both MBBS and BDS have been assigned random numbers by Vice-Chancellor S.Manian on June 27.The candidates who have applied already can visit the University website and have a look at the random numbers assigned to them.
The date of counseling for Annamalai University is yet to be decided by the concerned authorities. It will be announced later and duly informed to all the applicants through this website. The admission process to be conducted completely on the basis of merit, and by strictly adhering to the rule of reservation of the Government of Tamil Nadu. Note that About 3 percent of the total number of seats have been reserved for the differently abled persons
The final list based on which the admission process will take place is based on the marks obtained by the candidate in relevant subjects of H.S.C or equivalent examinations. The candidates who are eligible can attend the Annamalai counselling process. The schedule for the same has been made available by July 1 on-wards.
